Save energy thanks to the summer heat

The arrival of the summer, and the resulting increase in temperatures and daylight hours, can lead to an energy saving in our homes if we know how to make the most of it. It is sufficient to follow a few simple pieces of advice.

Firstly we must bear in mind that if we are going to go on holiday it is highly advisable to disconnect the plugs, since modern electrical appliances usually consume energy even when they are not in use, which is known as standby energy.

If this is not the case and during the summer we will continue to lead a normal everyday life, it is worth applying a few recommendations which without being an inconvenience can imply a saving.

For example, when we put the washing machine on it is recommendable to fill it, select the spin programme and use the summer temperatures to dry the clothes outside. In terms of personal hygiene we can also minimise our use of hot water in the shower and the bathroom.

It is recommendable to avoid keeping the fridge door open unnecessarily, since this is the household appliance that  consumes the most energy, and it must be remembered that keeping the door open increases the room temperature as it will need to use its motor more intensively. If we go on holiday for a long time it is worth switching it off, after removing the food inside that might otherwise have gone off.

One of the main household costs is lighting. Leaving the blinds and curtains open (which should preferably be light in colour), as well as leaving the windows open in the event that the air conditioning is not switched on, will allow natural light into the house, as well as the odd insect

Air conditioning

When talking about summer energy consumption we must not forget the air conditioning. The increased use of this kind of appliance has increased electricity consumption to such an extent that in hot countries such as Spain, in recent years the difference between winter and summer energy consumption has decreased or even disappeared.

Excessive use of air conditioning can also be damaging to our health, which is why it is recommended that it be used in moderation and at a temperature of about 24 degrees, in order to reduce the difference between the outside temperature and avoid harmful sudden changes in temperature.

Another important factor to bear in mind is that light fittings and other electrical appliances which are close to the air conditioning thermostat give off heat that makes it work longer, which is why it is recommendable to keep them further away so as to avoid unnecessary energy consumption. Likewise, wherever possible place window and central air conditioning devices on the shady or north side of your home so that it does not receive direct sunlight.

Finally, air conditioning will last longer and enable a greater saving if the air filters are cleaned once a month.
