Saving energy in companies

An increasing number of companies are choosing to include the environment in their overall management. Dozens of companies have now adopted...

Adequate environmental management procedures in order to reduce their consumption. Furthermore, by optimising their production process and using and minimising the waste they produce they reduce costs.Thinking about the best way of administering a resource as essential as energy at all times both in companies and at home is fundamental. An adequate administration involves greater efficiency in its use and as a result, among other things, there is a financial saving and less environmental contamination. The difference between achieving or not achieving this saving may be the reason why a company cannot compete adequately in terms of costs with others in the market.

Different technologies
The reduced cost-benefit is a very interesting factor for companies and wasting energy can represent one of the biggest costs. In order to stop paying high electricity and fuel bills there are different technologies, products and services related to energy efficiency.

The main ways of avoiding wasting energy involve forming energy-saving habits and introducing different materials which are more efficient in terms of energy use.

Turning off lights and electrical appliances which are not in use; making sure that there are no leaks in electric or gas installations; replacing incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs; using speed controls for motors; improving lubrication; using heat insulation, and improving combustion are some of the measures which all organisations can adopt.

At the same time, the introduction of energy efficient utilities, services and technologies is an investment, as the expenditure will be recuperated over time and it will represent lower daily costs.

It is about making a financial saving when using energy, reducing consumption to an environmentally acceptable minimum. This is only feasible through optimum use of modern technologies. The most feasible solutions may involve a combined strategy of saving energy, efficient energy use and changing to renewable energies.

The biggest saving potential lies with motorised or electrical equipment, lighting, air conditioning and heating systems. It is estimated that in the case of bakeries and other retail commercial activities the aforementioned saving potential can reach 20%, in other words, a fifth of the total consumption.

Tips for saving energy atwork
People who work in an office or factory can save a lot of energy if they are aware that the best way of saving energy with some appliances such as photocopiers, scanners, etc, is to switch them off when they are not going to be used for a prolonged period of time and even not using them, such as the lift for example if you are going up or down to the next floor.

In the case of the computer and taking short breaks, the best thing to do is to turn off the PC screen, which is responsible for the majority of the energy consumption. That way energy is saved without having to reboot the entire system.

Encourage the use of solar-powered calculators and street lamps, containing photoelectric cells, as well as preventive systems maintenance so as to guarantee saving and correct functioning.

Trying not to leave doors and windows open unnecessarily and not wasting water are other initiatives which must always be present, along with programming the air conditioning and heating thermostats at reasonable temperatures. In the same way, you should use the heating and air conditioning systems appropriately depending on the kind of business you do and the use made of the different areas (corridors, working areas, waiting rooms...).

There is no need to switch on lights which are not strictly necessary. Installing presence detector mechanisms and using the lighting zone functionality (switching on and off by zones) are ideas which help to control electricity consumption.

Low-energy light bulbs and electronic lighting systems are more efficient than conventional ones. Furthermore, regularly cleaning lights improves the quality of the lighting and saves a significant amount of energy.
