Energy saving with the oven

Ovens may be gas, electric, conventional, microwave, combined, self-cleaning& Which works out cheaper in the long run. The market offers a wide range of possibilities. But what are the main characteristics which should be considered when buying this domestic appliance.

Much of the culinary results and users ability to save energy lies in the initial choice of appliance. The first thing to consider is its energy efficiency and whether the ovens features suit your needs. It is also true that almost all new appliances are vastly improved when it comes to heating and insulation. However, if the appliance is now a few years old it may be a good idea to take a look at the door seal. To start with, if you need to buy an oven it is best to choose a gas one rather than an electric one, because they are more efficient. On the other hand, a microwave consumes the least energy: substituting a conventional oven for a microwave can lead to a saving of between 60% and 70% of energy and a significant reduction in cooking time. A microwave with a power of 1200 watts which is used for 15 minutes per day, some 10 hours per month, consumes no more than 13 kilowatts. Good habitsIrrespective of the model, with ovens, just as with hobs, you can use the residual heat if you turn them off just before the dish that is cooking or roasting is ready. The remaining heat will be able to finish off cooking the food. It is worth knowing that cooking at the maximum temperature, not only does not benefit the dish, but it consumes a lot of energy, despite saving time. As such, it is preferable to reduce the intensity once it has reached the maximum cooking point. Another saving measure involves not preheating the oven unless the recipe expressly states that this is required. Normally, for food which takes more than an hour to cook it is not necessary to preheat the oven. It must also be remembered that the oven temperature drops between 25 and 40 degrees each time the door is opened, which means that it consumes more energy to return to the temperature set by the thermostat. New ovens allow you to see inside without having to open the door. The majority of times it is unnecessary to open the door and, as has been said, it can lead to a loss of as much as 20% of the accumulated heat inside. It is a good idea to cook several foods at once and store them in the fridge or freezer so as to spend less time and energy, because a lot of energy is consumed every time the oven is switched on. Furthermore, you can also put several foods in the oven to cook at the same time. Where dishes are concerned, glass retains heat better than other materials. If you use glass dishes, tins or trays for baking the process will be shorter and you can reduce the oven temperature by approximately 25 degrees. Wasting energyOn the other hand, if you wish to toast some bread it is more recommendable to use a toaster than an oven. It goes without saying that the oven should never be used to heat the house. Energy is blatantly wasted in the case of microwave ovens when they are used to defrost food given that there are various other ways of doing it, such as taking the product out of the freezer the night before, without consuming any gas or electricity. Keeping domestic appliances clean, including the oven and the microwave, makes them last longer and also saves energy. If the oven is dirty and has a self-cleaning pyrolisis function (which breaks down dirt using heat), it is worth using this option after every use, whilst the oven is still hot.
