Maintaining a household electricity system in good condition is good for the property itself but, above all, for those who live in it. In order to check and look after the elements making up the electric switchboard and be able to protect them it is sensible to acquire some basic knowledge.
Regularly checking the electricity system gives you the chance to find damaged connections and faulty switches in time. That way, accidents can be avoided and savings will be made in electricity consumption and in repairs to the system itself, as well as to electrical devices. Something else that should always be taken into account is that, before carrying out any repairs, the electricity should first be turned off at the mains. So as to avoid overloading the system it should not be overloaded with too many connections or a lot of devices in the same socket. It is better not to use adaptors but to use multiple plug points. The cable connections and joins must be firm and well insulated. An earth connection should also be installed. This is a low-resistance conductor which is introduced into the earth so as to avoid a voltage increase which is larger than that which the system can take. The earth connection is green and yellow. The network should be distributed in appropriate insulated tubes and staples should not be used to fix cables to the wall, unless the cable and the staple have been especially made for that purpose. Protection systemsThere are special protection systems which are highly suitable for avoiding electricity surges. These devices protect the equipment in a house from incidents on the electricity system, from currents generated by electronic receivers and external factors such as lightning. " Surge limiter: there are two models, one can be used for all devices connected to the home electricity system and the other is socket based and protects the equipment plugged into it." Electronic differential trip: in large buildings and offices with a large number of machines and lights it is possible that the trip switch is frequently activated for no apparent reason. This mechanism prevents this kind of power cut." Differential pick-up: when a problem with the internal system activates the trip switch this equipment checks whether the reason for the power-cut still exists. If this is not the case, it automatically restarts the system. It is very useful in second homes, in properties with alarms, freezer chests, etc." Circuit breakers: they provide protection against incidents resulting from short-circuits and surges in each of the internal circuits making up the system." Uninterrupted power supply (UPS): this maintains the electricity flow for a few minutes if there is a power cut as it works like a small battery. It is highly recommended for computers. Two conductors come into the house from the external electricity network and are connected to the meter that is installed and sealed by the electricity company. It is sensible to check that the trip switch test button works once a month and make sure that the service you have contracted is suitable for the electrical equipment that the house currently has. Good habitsThe meter, whether it is in the house or not, records electricity consumption. The base of the meter usually contains a general magnetothermic switch, also known as an intensity limiter, which is used to turn the voltage in the electric circuit on and off. This switch is designed to activate when the power absorbed by the domestic system exceeds that stipulated by the contract. Trip switches should never lock so that they can work freely in the event of a system fault. Regardless, you should not tinker with the electricity system without having sufficient knowledge. Should you do so, a very useful tool is a voltage sensor. This is a voltage detector which is used to ascertain whether there is an electricity leak. The desire to fix small issues causes numerous domestic accidents every year. When in doubt it is preferable to get an expert to check the network or device. A poor repair may even cause a fire. Good habits should include unplugging electrical devices which are not frequently used and unplugging those that you are going to handle or clean. You should always unplug by pulling the plug and not the wire. Finally, it is sensible to remember that, due to the combination of water and electricity, the bathroom is the most dangerous room in the house. Consequently it is forbidden to install switches, sockets and lighting devices close to the bath.
