Servicing the boiler

Annual services are recommended for diesel oil and gas boilers. Although it is advisable to take out this kind of service with the manufacturer or the energy supplier, the user should have some minimal knowledge about the appliance in order to check it before switching it on after the summer.

Both gas and diesel oil boilers require little maintenance in order to work perfectly when the cold weather arrives. For safety reasons, it is essential that the technical service performs an annual review in order to clean the burners and regulate all of the systems, which are different depending on the type of appliance, and must be in working order before the boiler resumes its activity in autumn and winter.
It is recommended that you take out this service with the boiler manufacturer, installer or gas supplier, so that the boiler is inspected annually. There are several types of maintenance contracts and not all of them include servicing the boiler, as such it is essential that the consumer researches the matter well and asks all of the pertinent questions before signing up. The questions that the consumer must consider are as follows: free annual boiler service; type of repair cover (cost of labour, parts…); service on bank holidays and associated price increase; and service level agreement (24 hours, 48 hours, emergencies…).
Along with maintenance, these appliances must be cleaned correctly. The best thing to do, is to clean the casing every week with a damp cloth and neutral soap. Under no circumstances should abrasive products or detergents which could damage the covering be used. Likewise, the evacuation pipe should be cleaned as well as the vents. They should not contain dust or dirt that obstructs the path of the gases to the exterior. Cleaning must be thorough, particularly if the appliance is in the kitchen, where there is a chance that oil will stick to the surface. If this task is performed every week, it will be easy and there will not be much dirt to remove.

Gas appliances

There are different types of gas boiler (condensing and storage), and each group contains different designs, with manual and digital devices and other features. However, the basic maintenance is similar for all of them. The user must fully understand the functions of all buttons and mechanisms (general switch for connecting ad disconnecting the appliance; the temperature selector for the heating; the operating indicators; temperature selector for the hot water; and the manometer for the pressure).
The temperature selectors are usually set correctly when the boiler is installed and they are often not touched again, but it does not hurt for the user to check that the heating temperature is in the correct position before the cold weather starts, and that they adjust it in accordance with their needs, firstly for moderately cold weather (lower temperature) and then from December for the extreme cold weather (higher temperature). If during the summer, the user has disconnected the heating function, they will need to reconnect it at this point.
This is the time to check the water pressure, which should be greater than or equal to 1 bar. If the manometer shows that it is below this value, it is necessary to fill the system with water and this should only be done using water from the mains. The appliance instructions will include a section about correctly filling the system with diagrams, but generally speaking almost all gas boilers work as follows: You need to open all of the thermostatic valves and radiator taps; insert the handle for the filling key (the symbol and location will appear in the instructions for the boiler); slowly turn the filling key and allow water to flow in until the required value has been reached (you will see the pointer increasing gradually until it reaches 1 or 1.5); remove the air from the system using the purgers on the radiators, turn the filling key back and remove the handle.
These are the main issues to consider when servicing a gas boiler. Should any questions, faults, gas smells or suspected leaks arise, you should always phone the Official Technical Service.
