Solutions for insects in the home

With the arrival of the good weather, unpleasant insects start to appear in the house, which usually take up residence in the kitchen, where they can find food. We will set out the best solutions for getting rid of them.

The insects that are most commonly found in the home are ants and cockroaches. Both come into our homes in search of food, and as a result, kitchens and dining rooms are their favourite places. The most common method for getting rid of them is by using insecticides or poisonous products, but in the case of cockroaches, this remedy does not get rid of the plague, it kills those that are inside the house but does not get rid of the cockroach nest. The use of insecticides is recommended for getting rid of the insects that are already inside the house, but it does not address the issue, since the following day they will reappear. In the case of ants, we recommend that you use homemade solutions instead of poisonous products.

Domestic recipes to get rid of ants

To start with, you must clean away all leftover food after meals as this attracts ants, which will soon appear wherever there is the slightest scrap of food. Remove and wash your pet’s bowl as this is usually one of the elements that attracts them most since it always contains food remains. Wash work surfaces and kitchen tables with a mixture of half vinegar and half water, and place broken egg shells in the larder. You can also scatter cloves and ground pepper in places where you have seen ants. All of the abovementioned products are perfect for getting rid of these insects, and they will halt their advance into your home completely. Mint leaves and bay leaves are also excellent ant repellents. You can leave a few leaves in those places where these tiny insects have appeared. By taking these measures and making sure not to leave food scraps in the home, you will not need to use any insecticide.

Getting rid of cockroaches

Cockroaches are more unpleasant than ants. Their appearance causes greater repulsion and it is very difficult to get rid of a cockroach nest. The use of insecticides only deals with those that you see in your home, but this solution does not address the wider problem. Amongst the range of poisonous products, the most advisable is that you use the cockroach bait sold by the same manufacturers that make the well-known insecticide sprays. This bait is very easy to use. You just need to remove it correctly from the plastic container that it comes in and spread it throughout the areas where cockroaches are most often found, in other words, kitchens and bathrooms.

This bait usually comes in packets of six and twelve. You can select whichever format is appropriate depending on the size of the plague. You should use them all, placing them where the manufacturer recommends (under sinks, in corners, on skirting boards, underneath electrical household appliances). This bait includes substances that cockroaches like, which is why they will be attracted to it, they will eat these poisonous ingredients and return to the nest to die. The poison in the nest will spread to other cockroaches, and eventually you will get rid of the cockroaches. The bait lasts for three months and during this period you will come across the odd dead cockroach, but the majority of cockroaches will return to the nest to die. Do not forget to replace the bait after three months if the problem persists.
