Mikko Hirvonen has won his first rally of the season in the brand new Rally Jordan after putting in a great performance on the final day of the competition. The Finn who is now at the top of the driver leaderboard, crossed the line just one minute fifteen seconds ahead of the Spaniard Dani Sordo but was almost five minutes in front of the Australian Subaru driver, Atkinson, who was third.
The Finn racing with the BP-Ford team, now leads the overall Drivers` Championship thanks to this victory in Jordan and his big rival in this year`s championship, Loeb, had to retire on the second day after an accident. Nevertheless the Finn had to battle hard on the final leg of the competition against Sordo to carry off his first triumph of the season. Just one minute fifteen seconds separated the two drivers in a very tight finish.
Although Dani Sordo will have to wait a little longer for his first victory in the WRC, the Spanish Citroën driver got his best result of the season and was in with a chance of winning right to the very end of the Rally Jordan. With this deserved second place, Sordo has moved up one place in the Drivers` Championship and is now fifth.
Third place on the podium went to the New Zealander Chris Atkinson racing for Subaru, who was four minutes and fifty seconds behind the winner and he is now in third place in the Drivers` Championship. The Finnish driver with Ford, Jari-Matti Latvala, broke the rear suspension on his Focus RS when he was leading the race and this means that he lost several places in the classification and finished in seventh position.
