In spite of there being one round left in this year`s WRC there is already a World Champion for the 2008 season, none other than Sébastien Loeb who has won the title for the fifth time on the trot. The Frenchman finished in third place in the Rally Japan, behind the Finnish drivers Hirvonen and Latvala, but that was enough.
Every rally that takes place just goes to show that after Gronholm`s retirement there is no driver around that can put Loeb, the current World Rally Champion, in the shade. The Frenchman imposed himself on the Rally Corsica to finish ahead of Hirvonen, second in the WRC Drivers`Championship, and the latter`s teammate, the Belgian Duval, was third. Latvala was fourth ahead of the two Subaru drivers, Petter Solberg and Atkinson, fifth and sixth respectively.
The French driver Sébastien Loeb is just eight points away from winning his fifth world title after his recent victory in the Rally Catalunya. The Citröen driver just needs to finish second in Corsica, as long as his closest rival Mikko Hirvonen, does not win any points. The Frenchman`s teammate Dani Sordo, will try to help him achieve this by fighting to finish above the Finn and so extend Citröen`s hegemony as the season comes to a close.
