Fall in accidents over the Bank holiday weekend

The special controls set up by the DGT – Traffic Department – over the last few days, for the Mayday Bank holiday, ended with three fewer victims than in the same period last year. Likewise, the month of April has finished with positive figures, that is to say the number of accidents has decreased significantly compared to 2007.

The DGT has brought an end to the special controls that regulated the traffic over the Bank holiday weekend. There were a total of 32 accidents, in these 39 people were killed and 29 seriously injured over the four days that the special operation lasted. These figures are lower than last year’s - three victims fewe. In spite of the fall in the accident rate it should be pointed out that last year the holiday was one day longer.

A breakdown of the figures from this special operation shows that eight accidents of the thirty two that were recorded involved, above all, motorcycles, and 8 riders lost their lives. Once again and for the fourth consecutive month, according to the DGT after an analysis of the data, speeding continues to be the main cause of accidents.

The positive side of the data from April is that the drop in the number of road accidents continue, as as has been the case during 2008 so far. For the fourth consecutive month, April saw a significant fall in the number of road accidents, down by 23% compared to last year. And so April has become the fourth month where the number of deaths is under 200. This is a figure to bear in mind, because there is no precedent and because it puts the accident figures for the first quarter of the year 20% lower than in 2007.
