Review of the new registration tax

After the introduction of the new registration tax in Spain on 1st January, there is data available concerning its effect on the spending habits of Spanish drivers during the first quarter of 2008. An average of €389 has been saved by drivers who have bought a vehicle in the first three months of the year.

The average saving for a Spanish car owner when purchasing a new vehicle in the last four months has been calculated at €389. An a mount that reflects the evolution of the new tax on new cars, which was fixed at an average of 7.2% between January and April, compared to the 8.4% registered in the same period last year.

By sector the figures from the first four months of the year show a significant difference between different types of car after the new tax was introduced. Sales of medium-sized cars have benefitted most as they have had an average saving of €579 per vehicle, followed by the city car niche with an averge saving of €551. Lagging a little behind these two in the lower tax ranking are multi-purpose cars whose average saving has been €538 and mini cars with an average saving of €505 per vehicle.

Referring to the niches that have been worst affected by the new system of taxation, large displacement sports cars have seen a rise of €1 317 per vehicle compared to 2007. A similar figure, €1 314, is the amount paid by luxury vehicles in the first four months of this year. And drivers who have elected to buy a gas-guzzling SUV have had to pay an average of €1 137 per vehicle.
