Seat-belt use under scrutiny

The DGT - Dirección General de Tráfico Traffic Department – has published the data recorded in the latest campaign to check on seat-belt use which took place in the second fortnight of February. The DGT has announced that over 6,700 drivers have been charged as they were not wearing a seat-belt, and 264 children were travelling without making use of any system of restraint.

The latest campaign to check on seat-belt use made by the DGT last February, with the slogan “Hay muchas razones para ponerse el cinturón. Elige la tuya y hazlo – There are many rreasons to use a seat-belt, Choose one and wear it” now has official figures. The Police - Agentes de la Agrupación de Tráfico de la Guardia Civil – checked a total of 825 551 vehicles, and charged over 8 530 drivers for not complying with the legislation concerning the obligatory use of seat-belts.

The breakdown of the data that has been made public shows that 6 738 drivers, 1 536 passengers and 264 children under 12 were not using seat-belts or obligatory systems of child restraint. Comparing this study with the one carried out in 2007 shows that things have changed very little, because during the campaign last September, 7 930 drivers out of 768 297 were offending.

The Dirección General de Tráfico after publishing the results of this campaign reminds the public that the law - Ley de Seguridad Vial – sets out how seat belts and other approved systems should be used – correctly fastened belts are obligatory for both driver and all passengers, in both the city as well as highways. In addition to establishing a fine of €150 for anybody that does not fasten the belt, or other devices, correctly the new law controlling the number of points on a driving licence sets out a penalty of three points for the driver. The DGT reminds the public that during the Easter holiday period with its high number of car trips extra special care should be taken when using the car.
