Euro NCAP will toughen its tests in 2009

CopyEuroNCAP

Euro NCAP has performed its last tests of 2008 on some of Europe’s best selling cars. In this way, the European Consortium closes one phase and opens the door to a new one. From 2009, Euro NCAP will toughen its safety tests, modifying the parameters of its crash test towards the overall rating.

Euro NCAP has performed its last tests of the year and this is also the last time that the European consortium will use its current rating system, as in February 2009, it plans to introduce a system that modifies the test parameters. According to Euro NCAP, the tests will be tougher and stricter when assessing the overall safety performance of vehicles.

In 2009, Euro NCAP will use an overall rating, with a maximum of five stars, taking into account the scores achieved in the three areas assessed up until now and in a new area of assessment. This new area of assessment, Safety Assist, will examine active safety technologies.

Of the 12 vehicles which Euro NCAP has recently tested, eight received Euro NCAP’s maximum award of five stars. Of these eight vehicles, the new Megane stands out for achieving the highest score in the history of this type of safety test, achieving 37 out of a maximum of 37 points. Euro NCAP had never awarded this score to any vehicle before.
