La DGT sets up Operation Easter - Semana Santa

The Dirección General de Tráfico – Traffic Department - has set up the special Easter traffic controls which, just like every year, it hopes to maintain a fluid flow of vehicles on Spanish roads and to lower the number of accidents. Sources at the DGT predict a total of around 15 and a half million trips over the next few days on Spanish roads. The DGT will maintain the controls in operation until Monday 24th March.

The Operation Easter - Semana Santa that has been prepared by the DGT will be divided into the two typical phases used every year, those of exit and return. At the same time the exit operation is also divided into two parts. The first part of this exit will take place over the forthcoming weekend starting on Friday 14th, and the second and more important section will be during Holy Week, to be specific on Wednesday 19th and Maundy Thursday, days when the DGT predicts the highest number of road trips of the holiday period. As for the return operation the DGT has established the dates as Saturday 22rd until Monday 24th March - a holiday in many regions.

Some of the measures taken in this year`s operation to improve public safety include the use of over 620 radars, both fixed and mobile, 561 vehicles prepared to carry out breathalyser tests and up to 262 camouflaged police cars out on the roads to catch dangerous drivers. What is more the DGT has set up an awareness campaign for all drivers and road users. The slogan adopted is: “Esta Semana Santa, todos contamos, todos descontamos – This Easter we all count and we can all lower the figures”, the DGT is aiming to convince drivers once again that they should drive with care and at the same time respect other road users when they are at the wheel, two essential factors if the high acccident rate is to be lowered.

One of the big objectives of the DGT this Semana Santa is to lower the number of fatalities on the roads compared to previous years - 103 people were killed during last year`s Easter holiday period. If this achieved the falling trend in the number of people killed on Spanish roads during January and February will be maintained, meaning that 2008 will be one of the years with the lowest number of fatalities ever recorded.
