The DGT gets green light to continue

The improving behaviour of Spanish drivers on the roads and new stricter laws means that many working in this field are more optimistic about even greater strides being taken in the world of road safety. The latest data published by the DGT, Dirección General de Tráfico - Traffic Department – show an overall fall of 32% in the number of road accidents, compared to the figures recorded in 2003.

After the good results obtained in the last four years regarding road accidents, the work done by Pere Navarro and his team at the DGT have received support from the government and so they will continue to do their jobs for another four years. Without a doubt Pere Navarro`s and his team`s work over the last few years has been marked by measures such as the new driving licence with points, the reform of fines according to the severity of the offence and whether they are repeat offenders.

After the reform of the Código Penal – Penal Code – road safety section which now includes prison sentences for those who drink and drive or are caught speeding, it seems that drivers are now calmer and better behaved on the roads. The new driving licence has also played a big part in this change in driver behaviour which has brought safer roads and fewer accidents.

The measures taken by the DGT in the last few years have brought a drop in the accident rate so that the figures are at their lowest level for forty years. The overall fall is 32% compared to the figures recorded in 2003, this can be seen for example from the figures for Easter 2008. There was a drop of around 40% in the number of road users killed. The good figures for car accidents and deaths is in direct contrast with the stagnation in the motorbike rider accident rate. Without a doubt this depressing fact will be one of the targets for the DGT over the next couple of years.
