The DGT sets up a campaign for helmet use

Copy Motesa Honda

The DGT - Dirección General de Tráfico Traffic Department – has set up a special campaign, that will last over the next few days, to monitor and fine motorbike riders not wearing a helmet and to make sure that they wear one whenever they ride, explaining to offenders how important this obligatory accessory is for their own safety. The DGT is extending the campaign on roads around Spain.

The campaign set up by the DGT to monitor and make riders aware of helmet use involves a large nymber of police officers - Agrupación de Tráfico de la Guardia Civil – as well as police forces in the regions and local police. The aim is to check at least 50 000 motorbike and moped riders. Those offending against the law will receive a fine of up to €300, they will also lose three points from their licence, and they also face the prospect of their bike being immobilised.

In spite of helmets being used by the majority of moped and motorbike riders, something that has become generalised over the last few years, there are still a significant number that refuse to wear one all the time. A frightening example of this is the fact that 30% of moped riders involved in traffic accidents are not wearing a helmet. Just in 2007 528 riders lost their lives on the roads as they were not wearing a helmet.

The use of a helmet protects the rider from the more serious injuries typical in an accident, those affecting the head and brain. Moreover the use of a helmet lowers the number of victims by 50% and avoids two out of every three brain injuries. The final objective of this campaign, as in many others, is without a doubt to make as many riders as possible wear a helmet - always.
