Around 6 000 jobs in the motorbike sales and repair sector are in danger in the short term according to the industry`s association Anesdor, the Asociación Nacional de Empresas del Sector de las Dos Ruedas. The number of jobs that could be lost may rise to 25% of those currently working in this sector over the next few months as a consequence of the fall in sales.
The crisis in the two-wheel sector in the whole of 2008 has seen a dramatic fall in sales, this is having a knock-on effect and it is now affecting a large number of the workers in the different motorbike factories and dealers, as well as those working in the field of repair. This year has been one of the toughest ever in the motorbike sector since there has been a drop of 20% in the market since the year started.
Motorbike registrations have been falling all year and this has driven the the sales and repair sector, as well as those working in production and logistics, to turn to part-time working and at the same time to job losses. And the forecasts for the next few months are not promising at all.
Anesdor estimates that a fall in the market for two-wheeled vehicles of around 40% would have some very negative consequences on the workers at Spanish plants and any investment that may have been in the pipeline.
