The Federación Europea de Asociaciones Motoristas, which represents all Spanish motorbike riders through the Asociación Mutua Motera, has managed to achieve an important step forward regarding road safety. In the latest meeting a series of decisions and commitments were accepted, their aim is to improve the protection of riders before and after an accident.
The latest meeting of the CEN - Comité Europeo de Normalización European Committee for Standardization - in Milan, saw a firm response in the search for a solution to a problem that seemed to have no end. Those participating in the meeting approved the creation of a normalised standard for the systems that protect motorbike riders, called SPM, which lowers the severity of the injuries sustained in an accident with a road barrier.
This norm, which would be valid all over Europe, has to be developed according to the norms of each of the EU member country itself, taking into account the technical possibilities at each stage of its application. For Europe this process is very similar to the one that was developed within Spain when it applied the UNE 135900 AENOR norm. After developing the European standard its application in all member countries would be obligatory, and so all motorbike riders would be travelling on safer roads as the installation of SPM systems would be obligatory on all European roads.
Spanish motorbike riders also participated in the approval of this European-wide safety process as they were represented by the Asociación Muta Motera as part of the Federación Europea de Asociaciones Motoristas.
