The difficulties that drivers of trucks, coaches and other large vehicles have nowadays when it comes to overtaking changing lane and carrying out other manoeuvres seem to be coming to an end. The solution to these problems is part of a project that has been undertaken at the Universidad Politécnica de Catalunya.
The Car Safety department at the Universidad Politécnica de Catalunya has carried out a research project that has produced a new driver aid system that informs drivers, in real time, of the distance between themselves and the vehicles behind them. This is important especially when it comes to overtaking or changing lane on dual carriageways and motorways.
This system works with four ultrasound sensors, two on either side at the rear of the vehicle. These are switched on when the drivers uses an indicator. Whether it is possible or not to go overhead with the manoeuvre is shown on the dashboard with the system warning the driver when it is not possible. The sensors have a range of six metres and carry out the relevant measurements 10 times per second.
According to David Gallegos, the leader of the project, this new system will cost around €150 including installation. A modest amount compared to the quality and importance of its results for truck and coach drivers. This project seems to have improved one of the bigglest problems that truck and coach drivers come across every day.
