Additivated bitumens

Roadworks

At times, with certain types of aggregates, both conventional and modified bitumens can experience adhesivity problems, due to a lack of physicochemical affinity. Although it is an expensive solution -when not set out as obligatory in the Technical Specification Document PG•3-, the use of high-quality fillers, such as limestone or cement, can improve the performance of the mixture with regard to water. Another solution is to resort to the addition of adhesivity improvers.

Repsol YPF, aware of this problem, has, been carrying out research for several years on bitumens and their performance with all types of aggregates.

We currently have specific bitumen lines in all of our refineries in order to carry out the additivation process, according to each case, the type of aggregate and the asphaltic mixture to be produced.

Once the type of bitumen has been selected, the additive is added to the production line, guaranteeing that the final product is completely homogeneous.

These bitumens allow for the use of lower-quality aggregates and also for a reduction in the use of high-quality fillers.

Additivated bitumens are used to produce asphaltic mixtures when there is a lack of adhesivity between the aggregates and the bitumen. They have the same applications as asphaltic bitumens and bitumens modified with polymers.
