Conventional and modified bituminous emulsions

MotorwayBituminous emulsions are colloidal dispersions of bitumen droplets in an aqueous phase, generally composed of water and an emulsifying agent, which is either of an anionic or cationic nature in order to facilitate its dispersion, mixture and adhesion at room temperature. The emulsions enable the bituminous binder to be applied cold, thus allowing the process of heating the aggregates and bitumens to be omitted.

For certain types of treatment, such as surfacing, slurry seal and cold mix, the advantages provided by bituminous emulsions are well-known: ease of use, structural flexibility etc.

Repsol YPF Lubricants and Specialised Products possesses the technology and facilities necessary to produce any type of emulsion, be it cationic, anionic, quick-, medium- or slow-breaking or over-stabilized, covering all areas of use of these substances.

If, when producing emulsions, bitumens that have been modified with polymers are used, modified emulsions will be obtained, which have the same advantages as a bitumen modified with polymers. These emulsions are therefore apt for use in areas with heavy traffic or an extreme climate.

Conventional and modified bituminous emulsions are marketed in Spain in accordance with the specifications set out in the Pliego de Prescripciones Técnicas (Technical Specifications Document). Each specified type has a different use: adhesive surfacing, primer surfacing, surface treatments, cold mix, gravel emulsions, slurry seal, etc.
