Oil rig at sunset

All organic substances that, when combined with oxygen, produce a reaction of oxidisation that releases heat, are known as fuels. The provision of oxygen is made by the oxidiser, which is usually the air in the environment, and is sometimes warm air, sometimes air enriched with oxygen and may even be pure oxygen.

From an economic-energetic perspective, we are interested in those fuels in which the use of the heat that is generated proves economically profitable, and which are classified, depending on the state in which they are found, as:

  • Solid fuels: coal, solid urban waste,  …
  • Liquid fuels: fuel-oil, gas-oil,  …
  • Gaseous fuels: LPGs, natural gas, biogas…

In the following section, we will exclusively look at liquid and gaseous fuels, which are basically composed of hydrocarbons.
