Air vent

Propane and butane gases are non-toxic. However, given that they weigh more than air, they tend to accumulate in low places, and therefore cannot be used or stored in basements.

Both propane and butane are odourless, yet a distinctive odour is added to the gas so that if there is a leak, you will notice it immediately.

All gas appliances must be of types approved by the Ministry of Energy and must display the manufacturer's label.

The area where a gas system is installed and used must always be ventilated. Never obstruct or cover the airflow grille.

Pot on the stove

Watch your cooking utensils on the burners to ensure that the contents do not spill over. This could extinguish the burner and cause a gas leak.

Clean your system's gas and smoke ducts regularly.

A flame that is bright, stable, and bluish indicates good and safe gas combustion, and reduced gas consumption.

Only use an authorized gas installation company for your gas system repairs and modifications. Ask to see their identification and certification.

Notice warning of danger of red flame

If you will be away for a prolonged period of time, remember to shut off all gas valves as well as the mains. Have your appliances inspected regularly, specially if you notice a noisy or flickering flame.

A flame with red or yellow tips indicates poor combustion, possibly due to inadequate gas flow regulation or dirt on the burners. Poor combustion produces carbon monoxide, a toxic gas which blackens the bottom of your cooking utensils.
