Repsol YPF produces and sells three types of propylene glycols:
PROPYLENE GLYCOL PG (MPG)
DIPROPYLENE GLYCOL: (DPG)
TRIPROPYLENE GLYCOL: (TPG)
All of them are obtained by reaction of one molecule of water and one (MPG), two (DPG) or three (TPG) propylene oxide molecules without adding any solvent. Currently, industrial production is performed by addition of water to propylene oxide. At reaction temperature (120-180 ºC) and without catalyst, all glycols are formed. The proportion of glycols depends on the ratio water/PO. The separation of glycols and water is performed by consecutives distillations.
Physical characteristics of glycols are very similar: all are clear liquids, practically odorless, hygroscopic and with low volatility. They are excellent solvents for many organic compounds and completely soluble in water.MPG, DPG and TPG are stable compounds that carry two hydroxyl groups and can react as diols to obtain esters and ethers.
