The Environment
Costa

The need to make socioeconomic development and coastal conservation compatible obliges us to zealously learn about and anticipate factors that may impact the coasts.

The sea, besides providing living resources, has great economic importance for transport, trade, leisure, etc. That is why it has to endure negative human-induced impacts.

Each ocean or sea has its particular environmental situation according to its geographic and ecological characteristics, the human activity taking place along its coast, and the economy of the countries that live along its coasts. Coastal areas bear the brunt of the marine ecological problem, since they are where most maritime traffic activities take place, as well as extraction of fishing and mineral resources, recreational activities, spillage, waste dumping, and urban development.

The environment is a heritage we all share, and biodiversity of oceans is a public asset that must also be protected and conserved by private sector activities. In Repsol YPF, concern for the environment is a clear example of evolution in the way business activity is understood.

Repsol YPF's activities take place in a great variety of environments and socioeconomic situations, some of which are fragile. There is a great deal of associated resource movement. That is why adopting environmental criteria in all spheres of action and a permanent attitude of cooperation and transparency with the public management and local communities are considered fundamental to proper environmental management.

Raising public awareness and motivating all managers, technicians, and operatives at each organizational unit are key to ensuring that activities are carried out with the utmost respect for the environment.

One of the basic tools for environmental management at Repsol YPF is the Environmental Audit Plan.

Repsol Marine and Fishing (included organisationally in "Repsol Comercial" with in the company), has 174 vessel Supply Installations all along the coasts of peninsular Spain, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands. Proper environmental management is carried out at these installations, through yearly audits (which have taken place since 1988) that minimize environmental impacts derived from actions as well as verify compliance with current applicable legislation. In this way areas that need improvements are identified and concrete objectives to carry them out are drawn up.
