Generically High Quality Pig Production Units Project (Venezuela)

- Description

Through this programme, Repsol YPF hopes to help women and rural families as owners of pig production units.

The abovementioned project is carried out in the communities of Sipororo and Agua de Ángel, in the municipality of San Genaro de Boconoíto, Estado Portuguesa.

The aim of the programme is to improve the living conditions of poor families who live in rural housing located in the communities of Sipororo and Agua de Ángel, in the municipality of San Genaro de Boconoíto, Estado Portuguesa. This town covers 1,031 km2 and has a population of 22,049

In these communities, the existence of families headed by single mothers is very high. This fact, together with the insufficiency of sources of employment in the municipality, is forcing its inhabitants to the search for alternative sources of revenue to allow them to satisfy their needs of nourishment, health, education and housing.

The scant knowledge rural families have about raising pigs leads to the presence of infectious diseases, low quality of the products that impedes marketing, and thus low income in the families, increasing levels of malnutrition in the infantile population and increasing school dropout rates. A high number of children and teenagers are taken out of school to turn them into sources of family revenue. Many of these children and girls are left alone in their homes while their mothers work out of the home. Additionally, the inefficient managing of the systems of compilation of dregs and wastes, owed in many cases to an absence of a sewage system, is causing a serious deterioration of the environment in the region.

A) Associate

• Non Governmental Organization, House of the New Village, organization associated with the Social Group CESAP.
• Technical and financial contributors:

- Repsol YPF

B) Fields of action

Nourishment

One of the sources of employment is raising pigs to sell their products.

he women and families that are beneficiaries of the project contribute the food. At this point, the incorporation of 12 families the project of the FONDEC through forming a micro-bank will allow by means of loans to their associates the purchase of the needed food.

Health

In spite of the fact that one of the traditional sources of employment is raising pigs to sell their products, we see that the knowledge families have about nourishment and disease control, as well as marketing, is scant and in some cases non-existent.

Education

House of the New Village, together with Pfizer of Venezuela Salud Animal Group and Concentroccidente have developed the present project. They support 12 families that own pig production units, offering to them the materials for the construction of a unit with capacity to shelter a sow and its babies and one bio-digestor per family. In addition, contributing a generically high quality sow and some of the veterinary inputs is considered.

Housing

Likewise, a training plan is being developed that includes the whole productive cycle, marketing, health, environment and the promotion of organizational authorities to reduce costs and to allow them to acquire housing.
