Water is an indispensable natural resource for the existence of life on the planet. At the same time, fresh water, an indispensable human element, is a scarce resource. These circumstances determine the need to develop management that is orientated to rational use and its protection against any contamination process. Water consumption in Repsol YPF activities is mainly produced in refrigeration systems, water production and product purification operations. As a consequence, residual effluents are generated which are treated and later poured into the receiving areas (sea and rivers).
Of the most significant pollutants it is fit to mention: hydrocarbons, solids in suspension, and chemical oxygen demand. In addition to other less important pollutants generated (ammonia, nitrates, phosphates, phenols, sulphurs and BOD - Biological Oxygen Demand).
