Direct CO2 equivalent emissions
Direct greenhouse gas emissions with operating control criterion amounted to 27.403 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 2007. This is the lowest increase in the last three years (an increase of 1.6%).
CO2 emissions have increased by 2.2%. The increase has been concentrated in Upstream activities, mainly in the area of Mendoza, Argentina (0.209 million tonnes) due to the increase of venting in some deposits and in the area of Block 16 in Ecuador (0.07 million tonnes) due to greater production and a change in the type of fuels used. Additionally, there have been increases, to a lesser extent, in Downstream activity, particularly in the refinery of La Plata, Argentina (0.129 million tons) and the Chemicals industrial centre at Sines, Portugal (0.114 million tons) due to increased production.

Moreover, the intensity of CO2 equivalent emissions of the company’s refining activities has fallen by 2% compared to 2006, thanks to the consumption and decrease programmes carried out that have allowed for a reduction of 0.261 million tonnes.

Furthermore, total indirect emissions associated with energy purchases (electricity or steam) from external sources, in the inventory based on the operating control criterion, amount to 1.83 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent.
Other relevant indirect emissions come from the production and transportation of imported hydrogen for the company’s oil refineries and chemical plants. In 2007, a total of 0.75 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent were emitted.
