Environmental investments and expenses
Environmental costs are measured using Repsol YPF's Environmental Costs Guide, an adaptation of the API (American Petroleum Institute) guidelines, which have been adapted to fit the operational characteristics and technical criteria of Repsol YPF.
As in prior years, the main environmental investments made in 2007 include those required to achieve the quality levels for oil products as stipulated in Spanish and Argentinean legislation, totalling Euros 43 million. Individual projects of note in this area include the continuation of the petrol and diesel oil quality improvement programme at the Cartagena refinery (Spain), with an environmental investment of Euros 7.6 million.
Other significant investments were made to control, reduce and avoid pollutant emissions, including those earmarked for protecting the atmosphere, water resources, soil and groundwater resources. It’s remarkable the continuation of the construction of the treatment plant for soda char produced by the refinery, together with development of the HOP (Humid Oxidation with Peroxide) plant to treat wastewater from the petrochemical plant, both in Tarragona (Spain) and with investments of Euros 7 million and Euros 9 million, respectively.
